Ledger vs Trezor 2026 - Which Hardware Wallet Should You Buy?
A straight comparison of Ledger and Trezor - open source versus secure element, coin support, price, apps and real-world security record - plus a clear recommendation for each type of user.
Ledger and Trezor are the two names everyone lands on, and the choice between them is genuinely a values decision rather than a spec race. Both keep your keys off your computer. Both use standard BIP39 recovery. Both have been around long enough to have made public mistakes.
The real question is which trade-off you prefer: auditable firmware or hardened silicon.
The 30-second answer#
- Buy Ledger if you want the widest coin and chain support, a polished mobile experience with Bluetooth, and the strongest physical tamper resistance. Accept that the firmware core is closed.
- Buy Trezor if open source is a requirement, you value a company with a cleaner privacy record, and you mainly hold major assets. Accept a smaller supported-asset list and, on older models, weaker physical hardening.
- Buy both if the balance is large. Two vendors in a 2-of-3 multisig removes single-vendor risk entirely, and that is a real strategy rather than a flourish.

The open-source question#
This is the crux, so let us be precise about it.
Trezor's firmware is fully open. Anyone can read it, build it, and verify that the binary on the device matches the published source. That is a genuine security property: bugs and backdoors have nowhere to hide, and you do not have to trust SatoshiLabs' word about what the device does.
Ledger's core firmware (BOLOS) is closed, because the secure element vendor requires an NDA. The coin apps and Ledger Live are open, but the part that guards the seed is not independently auditable. You are trusting Ledger's internal process and its firmware signing.
Both positions are defensible, and each buys something the other cannot:
- Open firmware on a general-purpose microcontroller is verifiable but physically softer. Kraken Security Labs demonstrated in 2020 that a physically-stolen Trezor One or Model T could have its seed extracted by voltage glitching in about fifteen minutes. Trezor's response was to add a secure element to the Safe line - which reintroduces a component with closed internals, though the firmware around it stays open.
- Closed firmware on a certified secure element is hardened but must be trusted. Ledger Recover made that trust assumption uncomfortably visible.
Coin support#
Ledger wins this on breadth, and it is not close. Ledger supports thousands of assets across a very wide set of chains, including a long tail of smaller networks. Trezor covers Bitcoin, Ethereum and EVM chains, Litecoin, Cardano, and a solid list of majors - but the tail is thinner, and notable gaps have historically included some large non-EVM chains.

Apps and daily use#
Ledger Live is the more polished product: cleaner portfolio views, integrated staking, buy and swap through partners, and a good mobile app that pairs over Bluetooth. It also pushes more upsell at you than a security tool ideally would.
Trezor Suite is calmer and more privacy-conscious. Its Bitcoin tooling is notably strong - coin control, Tor routing, connecting to your own node - which matters a lot to Bitcoiners and not at all to everyone else.
Both work with third-party wallets. Ledger pairs with MetaMask, Rabby, Sparrow, Electrum; Trezor does likewise. Neither locks you in.
Privacy and company record#
Trezor is ahead here, straightforwardly.
Ledger's 2020 e-commerce breach exposed roughly a million emails and about 272,000 fuller records including home addresses, and the resulting phishing and intimidation campaign against customers has never fully stopped. The 2023 Connect Kit compromise served drainer code from a Ledger-published library. Neither incident touched keys; both damaged users.
SatoshiLabs has a quieter history and a stronger privacy posture in its software, including better support for running against your own node rather than a company server.
Mobile and Bluetooth#
If you manage crypto from a phone, Ledger is the only realistic choice. The Nano X, Flex and Stax pair over Bluetooth to Ledger Live mobile; Trezor has no Bluetooth model.
Bluetooth alarms some people. It should not much: the pairing carries the same unsigned-transaction-in, signature-out traffic as USB, and the transaction still has to be approved on the device screen. The radio does not weaken the key boundary.
Price#
At the entry level they are effectively tied - Nano S Plus and Safe 3 land around the same price and do the same job. Higher up, Trezor's flagship Safe 5 undercuts Ledger's Stax substantially. If you want a colour touchscreen for the least money, Trezor wins; if you want E Ink and wireless charging, Ledger is the only option.
Honestly: the entry models are the right buy for almost everyone in both ranges. Security is identical across each vendor's line.

The verdict#
There is no wrong answer here, which is why the argument never ends. Ledger is the better generalist: more chains, better mobile, harder silicon. Trezor is the better choice for people whose threat model includes the manufacturer, and its Bitcoin tooling is superior.
Pick based on which sentence bothers you more: "I cannot read the firmware," or "someone who steals my device might extract the seed in a lab." Then stop reading comparison articles and go set the thing up properly - your backup discipline will matter a hundred times more than this decision.

Is Trezor safer than Ledger?#
Neither is meaningfully safer for ordinary threats. Trezor is more auditable because its firmware is open; Ledger is more resistant to physical attack because every model has a certified secure element. Which is "safer" depends entirely on whether you fear a thief or a vendor.
Does Ledger support more coins than Trezor?#
Yes, substantially - Ledger covers thousands of assets across a very wide range of chains, while Trezor focuses on majors and EVM networks. Check the current lists for your specific holdings.
Can I use the same recovery phrase on both?#
Yes. Both use the BIP39 standard, so a 12 or 24-word phrase from one restores on the other. That interoperability is your escape hatch if either company disappears.
Is Ledger's Bluetooth a security risk?#
Not materially. Transactions still have to be approved on the device screen and keys never leave the secure element, so Bluetooth changes the transport, not the security boundary.
Which is better for beginners?#
Both are approachable. Ledger Live is a slightly friendlier first experience and Ledger's setup flow is well signposted; Trezor Suite is calmer and less commercial. Either will serve a beginner well.
